Custom hearing aids are so called, because all of the components sit within a custom made shell, made from an impression of your ear. There are a number of different sizes of custom hearing aid available, and you may see terms such as ITE (In the ear - largest), ITC (In the canal - medium), MC (mini canal), and CIC (completely in the canal - smallest) being used. The newest kind of custom aid is called the IIC (invisible in the canal), which sits deep in the ear canal for an almost invisible solution. Many brands now have this option available, but it is typically for mild or moderate hearing losses only.
At Hearing Exchange, all custom hearing aids cost the same regardless of size. You can order a custom aid online, but you must have an extra appointment with the audiologist to have impressions taken and choose the aid.
The audiologist will discuss with you which size of custom aid is most appropriate depending on factors such as your hearing loss, ear canal size and shape and dexterity.
Custom hearing aids are slightly more expensive than BTE or RIC aids because of the need for this extra appointment.
