Hearing Aid prices in Australia have been too high for many years, with top of the range hearing aids selling in some mainstream clinics for over $12,000 a pair.
There are a number of reasons, including the way the Government funds hearing aids for pensioners and veterans, and the smaller number of units sold in Australia compared to, say, Europe or the USA.
With more people shopping online for many daily purchases, some patients are opting to buy their hearing aids overseas or via the internet to take advantage of significantly lower costs, often as much as 50% lower than Australia.
There are some significant concerns when buying hearing aids via the internet. A hearing aid from the factory comes as a “blank canvas”, so to speak, and requires custom programming to ensure it helps the wearer optimally with their hearing loss. Special equipment and software is required, most of which is only readily available to qualified clinicians.
When purchasing aids via the internet, they are typically pre-programmed by the clinic to a hearing test result sent in by the purchaser. If the settings are inappropriate, and they usually are, the user will not be able to fully benefit from their hearing aids and may have little opportunity to have them adjusted in Australia, to better suit their hearing loss.
Additionally, most hearing aid companies offer a limited international warranty, often only 12 months. Should these hearing aids become damaged, a local subsidiary may refuse to service them, or will charge full price on repairs.
Hearing Exchange was established to make the price of hearing aids sold in Australia closer to those sold overseas. Our aim is to encourage people to support our local audiology industry, and to be able to access the full benefits of purchasing Australian sourced hearing aids with full warranties and full aftermarket support.
Obviously, wholesale prices in Australia are dramatically higher than overseas. So Hearing Exchange operates slightly differently to most mainstream clinics, so we can offer our significantly lower prices.
The prices listed on our website include both the cost of the hearing aids and a personal consultation with a qualified audiology clinician to fully assess your hearing and expertly program your hearing aids to your hearing loss. Any issues you have with the sound quality, hearing aid management or physical fit can be discussed and addressed with your clinician. Your package also includes a complimentary review appointment, batteries and cleaning and maintenance kit to take place several weeks after your fitting. In the review appointment, you can further address any issues that may have appeared since your initial fitting. Unfortunately hearing aids cannot be purchased without being professionally fitted by one of our clinicians.
Once you are satisfied, you can access a Hearing Exchange clinician whenever necessary, with each consultation billed separately, similar to visits to your Doctor or Dentist.
To offer our near-wholesale prices, we have elected to forgo the traditional, expensive audiology clinic. Instead, our audiologist clinicians are contracted by the hour, which enables us to dramatically reduce our staffing costs, as they are only employed when we have a paying customer.
All of these savings are passed on to you.
Hearing Exchange believes in a strong community. That is why we have partnered with Recycled Sound and Better Hearing VIC, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of the hard of hearing. We collect old or unused hearing aids across Victoria for dispatch to Better Hearing, where they are reprogrammed by dedicated clinicians, and distributed free of charge to those who have hearing loss, but cannot access hearing aids due to cost or lack of Government assistance.
Beneficiaries include persons on healthcare cards or low incomes, not eligible for Government help, as they do not have an eligible pension. In our experience, many people with hearing loss struggle to attain gainful employment as a result of their hearing difficulties. Empowering them with high quality, pre-loved and refurbished hearing aids at no cost, can have a profound effect on their confidence and ability to communicate effectively.
Hearing Exchange is offering a $50 voucher for each hearing aid donated ($100 per pair), which can be redeemed against any hearing aids purchased through this website.
You can EXCHANGE your generous donation for generous savings on your new hearing aids. With the money you save on your aids, you can afford to upgrade more regularly.
Your pre-loved hearing aids should be brought to our clinic at your fitting appointment, where they will be exchanged for your discount voucher. You can choose to use your voucher immediately against the cost of your new aids, or you can use it to assist with the purchase of accessories or batteries later down the track.
